What is an AI-readable website?
An AI-readable website is one that AI systems – ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google’s AI Overviews – can parse, understand and cite. It’s the difference between existing in AI answers and not existing at all. Roughly 47% of Google searches now end in an AI answer before any click, and more than half of web traffic is bots and agents, not people. This guide covers the four components, how to test any site in 20 seconds, and what to fix first.
The four components of AI readability
1. AI crawler access (robots.txt)
AI engines send their own crawlers: GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, Google-Extended. Many sites block them without realizing – some security plugins and CDN defaults treat them as scrapers. If they can’t get in, nothing else matters.
2. llms.txt – the README for AI
A plain-text file at your root (like robots.txt) summarizing who you are, what you sell, prices and contact. Honest status in 2026: server-log studies show AI search crawlers barely fetch it yet, so it is a cheap extra for AI agents and IDE tools – not the thing that earns citations. See a live example: lyveca.com/llms.txt.
3. Schema.org structured data (JSON-LD)
Machine-readable facts embedded in the page: Organization, Services, Offers with real prices, FAQPage. Structured, stat-dense content measurably lifts the odds of being cited by AI engines – concrete facts are what AI quotes.
4. Answer-shaped content
AI lifts the first one or two sentences of a section. If the direct answer to a buyer’s question isn’t in sentence one – question as heading, answer first, detail after – the AI moves on to a site where it is.
How to test any website in 20 seconds
We built a free checker that fetches exactly what an AI crawler reads and scores it 0–100: lyveca.com/check. For context: most business websites we’ve measured score under 50/100 – including web agencies. (This site scores 100/100, and yes, the checker itself is callable by AI agents over MCP.)
DIY or done for you
Everything above is doable in-house if you have a developer and a content writer – budget a few days of combined work. If you don’t: our AI Visibility Upgrade (€890) retrofits all four components onto an existing site in about a week, on any stack – WordPress, Shopify, custom – with a before/after score. It starts with a €90 audit (credited against the Upgrade) showing exactly what AI sees and says about your business today.

FAQ
What is an AI-readable website?
An AI-readable website is one that AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude can parse, understand and cite. Technically it means four things: AI crawlers are allowed in robots.txt, Schema.org JSON-LD provides structured facts, key pages are written so a direct answer appears in the first sentence, and an llms.txt file summarizes the business in plain text as a light extra.
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of a website (like robots.txt) that acts as a README for AI: who the business is, what it offers, prices, and contact. It gives language models a reliable, token-efficient summary instead of forcing them to guess from HTML. Honestly: 2026 server-log studies show AI search crawlers barely fetch it yet – treat it as a cheap extra for AI agents and IDE tools, not a citation lever.
How do I test if AI can read my website?
Use the free checker at lyveca.com/check – it fetches exactly what an AI crawler reads (robots.txt, llms.txt, structured data, meta, sitemap) and scores the site 0–100 in about 20 seconds. You can also ask Perplexity or ChatGPT to “summarize the website yourdomain.com” and see if the answer is accurate.
Does AI readability replace SEO?
No – it extends it. Classic SEO gets you ranked in Google’s blue links; AI readability (AEO – Answer Engine Optimization, closely related to GEO – Generative Engine Optimization) gets you quoted and recommended inside AI answers, which now conclude roughly 47% of Google searches before any click happens. Sites need both layers.
